A Strategic Course for Halal Compliance Readiness

Indonesia represents one of the most significant halal markets globally, supported by a population
exceeding 284 million people and a Muslim demographic of approximately 87%
(BPS-Statistics Indonesia, 2025; U.S. Department of State, 2024). As the country with the
largest Muslim population in the world, Indonesia plays a strategic role in shaping the development,
regulation, and future direction of the halal industry.

Indonesia’s Halal Assurance Framework

In response to the importance of halal governance, the Government of Indonesia established the
Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal (BPJPH) in 2017 under the mandate of
Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance (BPJPH, 2023).
BPJPH functions as the principal authority responsible for halal product assurance in Indonesia.

BPJPH’s regulatory scope covers not only products such as food, beverages, pharmaceuticals,
cosmetics, chemical products, and other consumer-related items, but also related activities such as
processing, storage, packaging, distribution, sales, and serving
(Government of the Republic of Indonesia, 2024).

The Importance of the Halal Supervisor

Within this framework, businesses are required to appoint a
Halal Supervisor to help maintain halal compliance at the operational level.
This role is important in overseeing halal-related processes, supporting preventive and corrective
actions, and assisting halal inspection procedures in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework
(Government of the Republic of Indonesia, 2024; Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, 2022).

Why This Course Matters

The demand for qualified halal personnel continues to grow alongside industry expansion,
cross-border trade, and regulatory expectations.

For Indonesian Market Access

For foreign business operators seeking to market halal products in Indonesia, halal certification
must follow the relevant BPJPH recognition or registration mechanism before products may be distributed
within the country (BPJPH, 2024).

For Organisational Readiness

Relevant Halal Supervisor documentation may also form part of the compliance framework for
medium-sized, large, and foreign business operators under Indonesia’s halal assurance regulations
(Government of the Republic of Indonesia, 2024).

For Professional Development

The Halal Supervisor pathway provides a meaningful opportunity for Muslim individuals to develop
practical halal governance knowledge and contribute to the integrity of halal operations across industries.
